The child who mimicked the parents’ faults asked why he was punished. The parent only said, “When you are an adult, you can do as you wish.”
The aspiring politician confronted his career opponent with a long list of laws and practices that influence and distort election results. The one who would likely die in office replied, “The only benefit of power is to use it.”
The patient sat in disbelief as he listened to advice from his overweight physician. The doctor advised, “Lose weight, or take these pills to help prevent a stroke or worse.”
The intuitive spiritual aspirant pointed to the scriptures to highlight poor behaviors to the leader of his community. The leader replied, “Those were different times, we’re much more advanced now.”
A society has surpassed a state of mere corruption when practically everyone has the belief that the laws and rules they agree are necessary but then are only applied when it’s convenient for them personally. An egotistical society is one in the process of collapse and decay.
The only remedy for the belief that rules are meant for them and not for me, is to take personal responsibility. To build unity, one must accept that rules and laws within a community apply to each person equally. Those who break the laws should never be the ones making the laws. Revere those with the self-control and integrity to obey common community standards.
